  6.   Metropolis. It is the name of a futuristic city, built on a
  7. gargantuan iron skeleton, with whole communities superimposed
  8. upon one another in prismatic vastnesses--the dwelling place of
  9. men who live to slave for their own machines.
  10.  
  11.   When first the huge city was flashed upon the screen, its
  12. structures stretching with geometric relentlessness into the
  13. infinite heavens, its enormous pistons thumping, dynamos
  14. roaring, cog-wheels whirring, it was agreed that nothing so
  15. immense, grand, complete had ever been comprehended by the eye.
  16. For a while it seemed as if one would behold an entire
  17. civilization revealed from an Olympian vantage point, would
  18. glimpse its heart palpitating beneath steel ribs. Then the
  19. scenario took hold, reduced the magnificent spectacle to the
  20. condition of a god smothered with a dish-rag.

  22.   Villain Inventor chases Mary up a roof, intent upon dashing
  23. her to earth, in the manner of spiteful evil-doers since
  24. Desperate Desmond. The hero pursues. During the struggle,
  25. Capitalist Masterman swears if the hero (his son) be spared, he
  26. will henceforth treat all working-men like brothers, never again
  27. allow a monster like Efficiency to be created. The villain
  28. topples off the roof. With Efficiency and Invention thus
  29. disposed of, happiness comes to man, the hero finds the
  30. heroine's lips, Labor and Capital strike hands, the city
  31. destroyed by evil counsel of Efficiency is to be rebuilt--how
  32. is not divulged.
